August 2021 – Houston, Texas

According to a press release  from the Department of Justice, Houston resident Kelvin Ramirez, age 25, has pleaded guilty to defrauding investors by promising high rates of return and low or no risk returns on foreign exchange investments.

The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) is the agency that licenses and regulates stockbrokers and brokerage firms. FINRA requires brokers and brokerage firms to report customer complaints and disputes as well as regulatory sanctions. In addition brokers are required to disclose certain financial matters such as personal bankruptcies, judgments and liens.

According to the release, Ramirez used social media platforms to promote himself as a successful trader of foreign exchange investments (forex). He used his Instagram accounts to market and attract investors. Ramirez fraudulently obtained over $650,000 from some 100 victims, and then used the investor funds for personal expenses.

Ramirez faces 20 years in prison and has agreed to repay the victims. Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 8, 2021.
