What kind of investment is Hospitality Investors REIT?

Hospitality Investors Trust is a non-publicly traded investment. This means it is illiquid and cannot be readily sold on any of the major exchanges, should an investor need or desire to raise cash. This type of investment is generally only suitable for experienced wealthy investors, however, due to the high commissions generated by this type of product brokers, financial advisors and brokerage firms often recommend it for the obvious reason–it generates profit for the firm and the broker.

The Securities & Exchange Commission and FINRA (The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority) have published  investor alerts warning the public of the special risks associated with investing in REITs. Those risks include:

  • Lack of Liquidity
  • Share Value Transparency-the difficulty of valuing a non-traded investment
  • Conflicts of Interest
  • Front End Fees

Brokers and financial advisors have a duty to make suitable recommendations to investors. Brokerage firms are required to supervise their brokers to assure that only suitable recommendations are made to customers. A breach of this duty forms the basis of liability for investor claims. FINRA arbitration is generally much more expedient than court litigation with most cases being resolved in 12-18 months. We generally do our work on a contingent fee basis, meaning that we are only paid if we are successful.
