The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) is the agency that licenses and regulates stockbrokers and brokerage firms. FINRA requires brokers and brokerage firms to report customer complaints and disputes as well as regulatory sanctions. In addition brokers are required to disclose certain financial matters such as personal bankruptcies, judgments and liens.

The customer alleges that she was given the recommendation to invest a large portion of her son’s investment portfolio in May 2013 in a closed end fund IPO that was not suitable and resulted in significant losses. The customer also alleges she incurred significant tax consequences on the realized gains from the sale of previous holdings used to purchase the closed end fund.
