The Florida Office of Financial Regulation (OFR) announced that John Edward Simpson was arrested in Tarpon Springs, Florida, and has been charged with securities fraud, grand theft and other charges.

According to the OFR, Simpson solicited 20 investors nationwide to invest in his company Defense Technology Corporation who were told that the company had developed a security system for schools and that the company would be going public soon. The OFR alleges that Simpson spent most of the money raised on personal expenses.

“The Florida Office of Financial Regulation is committed to protecting Florida’s consumers,” said OFR Commissioner Drew J. Breakspear. “We will continue to support licensed financial service providers and ensure that perpetrators of financial fraud are brought to justice.”
